Republican Charlie Baker has a nine-point lead, 45 percent to 36 percent, over Massachusetts attorney general Martha Coakley in the race to be the next governor of the Bay State.
Ms. Coakley, who famously lost a special election to former Sen. Scott Brown to replace the late Ted Kennedy in early 2010, had led by five in the Boston Globe’s weekly poll just two weeks ago before Mr. Baker caught up last week and took the lead in the latest one.
Mr. Baker now has a 4.5-point lead in RealClearPolitics’ latest average of public polling on the race to replace Democrat Deval Patrick, a two-term governor who isn’t seeking re-election.
Mr. Brown, who is challenging incumbent Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen in New Hampshire this year, lost his race for re-election in 2012 to Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren and ultimately opted not to run for governor of Massachusetts.
The survey of 500 likely voters was taken Oct. 19-22 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percentage points.
