The White House confirmed Tuesday that North Korea has released American Jeffrey Fowle, who had been detained by the regime since last spring.
“We certainly welcome the decision” by North Korea, White House press secretary Josh Earnest said. He said the administration expressed gratitude to Sweden for helping to facilitate Mr. Fowle’s release.
The White House called on North Korean authorities also to release U.S. citizens Kenneth Bae and Matthew Todd Miller, who are still being held by the secretive regime.
Mr. Fowle, 56, of Ohio, was in the country as a tourist when North Korea accused him of violating its laws, purportedly for leaving a Bible in his hotel room.
