The U.S. Senate race in North Carolina this year is poised to eclipse the $100 million dollar mark and could be the most expensive Senate contest in U.S. history, the Charlotte Observer reported.

The contest between Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan and Republican state House Speaker Thom Tillis is poised to top $103 million based on money spent or committed, about three-quarters of it from parties or interest groups.

That money paid for almost 80,000 television ads through Oct. 13, according to a Center for Public Integrity Analysis of data from the ad tracking firm CMAG/Kantar Media.

The 2012 U.S. Senate contest between Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Republican Scott Brown cost at least $76 million, the Observer said, with other tallies putting that total even higher.

Mr. Brown, a former senator from Massachusetts, is also challenging incumbent Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen in New Hampshire this year.
