Two FM radio stations in San Francisco have banned Lorde’s “Royals” from their airwaves as the Giants are set to take on the Kansas City Royals in the World Series this Tuesday.
San Francisco’s 104.5 KFOG and 96.5 KOIT announced the self-imposed ban after demands from listeners and to show of solidarity against the Royals, Mashable reported.
In retaliation, Mix 93.3 in Kansas City has called for listeners to inundate the San Francisco stations’ phone lines with requests for “Royals.” The Point 99.7 will also play the song once every hour from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
Mashable reports that Lorde’s song has a legitimate connection to the Kansas City baseball team. The 17-year-old singer revealed she was inspired for the song by a 1976 photo of retired Royals player George Brett.
Mr. Brett later sent Lorde an autographed Royals jersey that read: “Lorde, you are Royal to me,” Mashable reported.
