Jay Leno, comedian and former host of “The Tonight Show,” took a jab at the Clintons Sunday while he was accepting the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the Kennedy Center in Washington.
Mr. Leno, 64, mocked the claim by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that her family was in financial straits when she left the White House.
“The truth is, my time was done,” he quipped, CBS News reported. “When I left ’The Tonight Show,’ I didn’t leave dead broke like Bill and Hillary. I was able to save.”
Among those paying tribute: Chelsea Handler, Garth Brooks, Kevin Eubanks, Jimmy Fallon, Jerry Seinfeld and Wanda Sykes, CBS News reported.
Mr. Fallon took over for Mr. Leno earlier this year as “The Tonight Show” host.
Mr. Leno said on the red carpet that hosting “The Tonight Show” was one of his best experiences in his life, CBS News reported. He also praised Mr. Fallon for bringing a “new dynamic” to the show and added that “it’s fun to see it change.”
The Mark Twain prize honors comedians who’ve had an impact on American society. Past recipients include Carol Burnett, Ellen DeGeneres and Bill Cosby.
