ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - A vintage 66 Route motel in Albuquerque saved from a wrecking ball is set to undergo a $15.9 million redevelopment.
The Albuquerque Journal reports (https://goo.gl/ufPhBX) the city announced Tuesday that Palindrome Communities was selected to renovate the Pueblo-style El Vado Motel built in 1937. The motel near Albuquerque’s Old Town closed in 2005.
Under a renovation proposal, the motel will be redeveloped into a new motel, an amphitheater, restaurants and a hub of affordable housing.
Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry says the redevelopment celebrates the city’s history along Route 66. It is one of many Route 66 renovation projects in the city.
Palindrome Communities is a partnership of the Sawmill Community Land Trust and Portland, Ore.-based Pacificap.
