Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey leads his Republican challenger by 11 points, buoyed by wide support among women, said a Quinnipiac University Poll.
Women back the Democratic senator, 55-35 percent, while men are split at 47 percent for Mr. Booker and 45 percent for GOP contender Jeff Bell.
Among all voters, Mr. Booker enjoys a 51-40 percent lead, the poll found.
New Jersey voters have a favorable opinion of Mr. Booker, 54-26 percent, while 65 percent haven’t heard enough about Mr. Bell, who’s run for office before and worked in politics and consulting for decades, to have formed an opinion about him.
Mr. Booker is seeking his first full term after winning a special election in late 2013 to replace veteran Sen. Frank Lautenberg, who died of viral pneumonia in June 2013.
With five weeks to go, nearly four in five voters say they’ve picked a candidate. Nineteen percent say they may change their minds.
“Political observers have been saying New Jersey’s freshman senator, Cory Booker, is a shoo-in against Republican challenger Jeff Bell. Thanks to a big lead among women, things are looking good for the incumbent,” said Maurice Carroll, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.
