The Senate race in New Hampshire is a dead heat, according to a New England College poll Thursday that puts Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen less than 1 percentage point ahead of Republican challenger Scott Brown.
Ms. Shaheen grabs 47.1 percent compared to Mr. Brown’s 46.6 percent, a statistical tie in a poll with a margin of error of 2.7 percent.
Republicans are trying to pick up six Senate seats to retake the majority, making races like the one in New Hampshire pivotal. The GOP is portraying vulnerable Democrats as too closely aligned with President Obama.
In the New England College poll, just shy of 50 percent said they highly or somewhat disapprove of the president’s job performance, while 45 percent highly or somewhat approve.
Mr. Brown has highlighted Mr. Obama’s stances on health care, foreign policy and immigration in his attacks on Mrs. Shaheen, while the Republican could be vulnerable to voters who feel Mr. Brown, a former U.S. senator for Massachusetts who formally switched his residency, has few real ties to their state.
Respondents in the new poll also weighed in on the Granite State’s governor race, giving incumbent Democrat Maggie Hassan a 48-44 percent edge over Republican challenger Walt Havenstein.
