Cal Thomas strikes some salient points when discussing sexual assault on campus (“Combating campus sexual assaults,” Commentary, Web, Sept. 30). Certainly, parents should inculcate in their sons respect for women, and fathers and mothers alike should communicate to young women a sense of self-worth.

However, suggesting that we women arm ourselves with greater modesty in order to fend off rapists is naive. Likewise, there is no particular brand of chastity a woman can adopt that will ward off violent criminals. It is the rapist’s lack of morals and decency, not that of his victims, that ought to be considered.
