NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The owner of The Johnny Cash Museum in Nashville has bought the building the popular attraction is located in to make way for an expansion.
Bill Miller paid $2.7 million for the building south of Broadway. The expansion would add a third floor for special events and a doubling of the size of the first floor gift shop, The Tennessean reported (https://tnne.ws/1rOw3gq).
Miller says work should begin on the 21,000 square foot building by December. The new third floor will be able to accommodate 800 people and the facility’s existing events space will be converted into museum space.
He said buying the property demonstrates his commitment to the Nashville community and his partnership with the Cash estate.
“We look forward to many more years in Nashville and have a lot of surprises coming in this very building,” Miller said.
The larger events space is needed to accommodate more of the three to four events a week the museum has had to turn down.
Nearly two years ago, Miller opened the gift shop in the building, with the museum following about a year ago. Recently, Conde Nast’s Traveler again the facility ranked it No. 1 among the top “Must Visit Museums for Music Lovers” worldwide.
The expansion ultimately will add nearly 15,000 square feet.
