CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina U.S. Sen. Tim Scott is calling for a temporary travel ban from western Africa to the U.S. because of the Ebola outbreak.
The Republican lawmaker said in a news release on Friday that President Barack Obama should enforce a ban because airport screenings and self-reporting by travelers of where they have been is simply not enough.
The Ebola outbreak is centered in western Africa.
Scott said while five American airports are screening passengers, symptoms of people in the early stages of Ebola can be masked by over-the-counter medications.
S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control Director Catherine Templeton has said the state has been in contact with U.S. Customs to better determine where South Carolinians have traveled abroad and where foreign visitors have recently been.
