Louisiana Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal traveled to Manhattan on Thursday to stump with gubernatorial candidate Rob Astorino, who faces a tough battle in trying to unseat incumbent Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
The visit by Mr. Jindal, one of many 2016 GOP presidential hopefuls, contrasts with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, chairman of the Republican Governor’s association, who has seemed to avoid the race even though it’s right next door to his state.
“Chris is perfectly capable of speaking for himself. I’m here because I’ve been a long-time supporter of Rob’s. I know he’s going to do a great job as governor,” Mr. Jindal told the New York Observer in response to questions about Mr. Christie’s peculiar absence.
Mr. Christie has said that he wants to focus his efforts on more competitive races, arguing that Mr. Astorino stands little change against Mr. Cuomo.
“We don’t pay for landslides and we don’t invest in lost causes,” Mr. Christie said of the New York race while campaigning in July for GOP gubernatorial candidate Tom Foley in Connecticut, according to the New Jersey Star Ledger.
Polling data from Real Clear Politics shows Mr. Cuomo with a massive lead.
