House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi managed to raise $1 million from her colleagues in the last week to go toward Democrats’ campaign efforts in the House, Roll Call reported.
The big-time donations resulted from two recent conference calls during which Mrs. Pelosi, California Democrat, reportedly pressed members to meet or exceed their dues for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC).
As funding from GOP-aligned outside groups comes in, Rep. Steve Israel, the DCCC chairman, on Wednesday also called on outside groups aligned with Democrats to join the fight in the battle for control of the House. Democrats almost certainly will not net the 17 seats they need to regain a majority, but are still working to minimize potential pick-up opportunities for Republicans.
“Outside groups have always played a fundamentally important role in supporting our candidates and supporting our efforts,” said Mr. Israel, New York Democrat.
Many Democrats have spent much of the year complaining about the amount of money involved in elections from outside groups — even pushing for a constitutional amendment to limit what they deem excessive spending on political campaigns by individuals or groups.
