John Pistole, the head of the Transportation Security Administration, is going to retire by the end of the year, the agency said in a statement on Thursday.
Mr. Pistole will be named to take on a position in academia in 2015, his agency said, Fox News reported.
The administrator was named by President Obama to head up TSA in 2010. He previously worked for the FBI for 26 years, Fox News said.
Under his watch, the agency grew to employ over 60,000, and serve more than 450 airports around the nation.
