ANALYSIS/OPINION

First Lady Michelle Obama danced with a turnip in a short viral video to promote healthy living, but her message may have been lost in choosing a song that celebrates binge drinking and other unhealthy behaviors.

The party anthem used in the video, Lil Jon’s “Turn Down For What,” promotes “turning up,” defined by the slang website Urban Dictionary as “acting crazy due to consumption of large amounts of alcohol, marijuana, molly or other drugs.”

In turn, the rap decries “turning down,” which Urban Dictionary defines as “to not get rowdy, remain calm.”

One option seems healthier than the other.

Ms. Obama may have been unaware of the term’s meaning as she only uses the vamp, but the rap’s twelve words at least promote speedy alcohol consumption.

Lil Jon calls for “another round of shots” six times in just three and a half minutes.

The first lady might disagree, but downing six shots in rapid succession is probably not the ideal way to get America active and healthy.
