Vice President Joseph R. Biden, in a closed-door session with black clergy members in Wilmington, South Carolina, referred to himself as the only “white boy” for miles around and then went on to slam the Republican Party.
“[I’m] the only white boy on the east side of Wilmington,” he said, while pushing for faith leaders to get out the vote for Democrats in November, CNN reported.
He also referred to the tea party as outright “crazy” and said voters should run from the Republicans, CNN reported, citing a readout of Mr. Biden’s remarks that was provided by a person at the meeting.
“This is not your father’s Republican Party,” Mr. Biden said, CNN reported. “This is a different breed of cat, man. I am not making a moral judgment, but I will tell you that they have no judgment.”
Mr. Biden was in the state to help support vulnerable Democrats running tight races. And to the clergy, he predicted dire outcomes if Republicans took over Capitol Hill.
“If they win again, we are going to get no consensus on anything for the next two, four, six years,” Mr. Biden said, CNN reported. “But if we beat some of these folks, it’s going to give some spine to the Republicans who know better. If we win, it will turn things around. There will begin to be consensus.”
About 100 clergy members attended the meeting, CNN said.
