A new poll shows a tie in North Carolina between incumbent Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan and Republican Thom Tillis as national Republicans indicate they will dump some big-time money in an already expensive race that Democrats hope to hold.
A High Point University poll of 584 likely voters conducted from Sept. 30 to Oct. 2 and released Monday shows Ms. Hagan and Mr. Tillis tied at 40 percent apiece, with Libertarian Sean Haugh taking 7 percent of the vote.
Ms. Hagan has had small leads in other recent polls and has a 1.5-point lead over Mr. Tillis in RealClearPolitics’ latest average of polling on the race.
But recent polling appears sufficiently close for the National Republican Senatorial Committee to reserve about $6 million in advertising time to boost Mr. Tillis in the closing stretch.
Republicans are largely playing offense in their bid to retake control of the Senate. But close races in Kansas and South Dakota that the GOP had long banked on holding could complicate the calculus for Republicans, who are starting to see close contests in places like Louisiana, Arkansas and Colorado move in their direction.
