Redskins coach Jay Gruden said Monday that quarterback Robert Griffin III will participate in individual drills this week and could fully return to practice by the following week.

Griffin warmed up on the field Sunday before Washington’s game against the Arizona Cardinals, shuffling, backpedaling and doing other footwork drills. He has been out since Sept. 14, when he dislocated his left ankle against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Gruden said Griffin could return to practice in the week leading up to Washington’s Monday night matchup with the Dallas Cowboys on Oct. 27, though the team will exercise caution with its franchise quarterback. The Redskins will play Dallas and Minnesota before its bye week in Week 10.

“As far as actually taking practice reps, I think that’ll be at least another week,” Gruden said. “But get him out there, do some individual drills, maybe throw some balls to the wideouts, that’ll be the first step. And then we’ll try to get him maybe in some practice situations and see where he is.”

When asked if he would consider starting third-string quarterback Colt McCoy this week, Gruden responded with a flat “no.” The first-year coach said Kirk Cousins will start Sunday against the Tennessee Titans.

In other injury news, Gruden said cornerback David Amerson is going through the league’s concussion protocol and will be evaluated further on Tuesday. Amerson was ruled out of Sunday’s game with a concussion after a collision in the first quarter. Gruden said the second-year player is day-to-day.

Inside linebacker Perry Riley, who missed Sunday’s game with a sprained MCL in his left knee, will also be listed as day-to-day, Gruden said.

Ryan Clark (ankle), Akeem Jordan (knee), Brian Orakpo (ankle) and Trenton Robinson (ankle) are listed as limited in practice. Trent Williams (knee) is also listed as limited after aggravating his knee injury on Sunday.

“I think [he] just banged it a little bit,” Gruden said. “He’ll be OK, but he’s still suffering a little bit of pain.”

Gruden added that Washington’s two players on the physically-unable-to-perform list, wide receiver Leonard Hankerson and defensive end Stephen Bowen, will return to practice this week. Both could play Sunday against Tennessee, if activated by the team.
