As 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney gave state Sen. Joni Ernst a boost in her bid for U.S. Senate bid in Iowa, a new poll shows her with a razor-thin, 1-point lead over Democratic Rep. Bruce Braley, 47 percent to 46 percent.
The Des Moines Register/Bloomberg Politics poll released over the weekend shows a tight race that could go either way at this point; Ms. Ernst led Mr. Braley by a 6-point margin two weeks ago in the same poll, 44 percent to 38 percent.
Iowa, with the competitive Senate race this year and early caucuses in presidential years, has been a popular stop for one-time and possibly future presidential contenders this year to throw their support behind Ms. Ernst or Mr. Braley and get their name out to Iowa voters.
Mr. Romney, though he has repeatedly said he’s not running for president again, has made multiple stops to Iowa this year, including Sunday’s appearance for Ms. Ernst.
