Kentavious Caldwell-Pope exited in the third quarter with a left knee sprain, as the Detroit Pistons fell to the Washington Wizards 91-89 on Sunday.
Caldwell-Pope, a second-year guard out of Georgia, fell underneath Washington’s basket and needed assistance getting to the locker room. He did not return after scoring 12 points in 24 minutes.
Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy said Caldwell-Pope will be looked at when the team returns to Detroit.
“We’ll re-evaluate it going forward,” Van Gundy said. “We’ll get him an MRI and we’ll go from there, see what’s going on.”
Caldwell-Pope is averaging 16.7 points through Detroit’s first three preseason games after scoring 5.9 per game in his 2013 rookie season. He joins Will Bynum (right hamstring) and Jodie Meeks (back spsms) as Pistons guards dealing with injuries.
“It happens, we’ll see what they say with (Caldwell-Pope) when they get it done,” Van Gundy said. “You go through these things, everybody goes through them.”
John Wall led the Wizards (3-1) with 15 points in their preseason home opener and Marcin Gortat added 11 points and 11 rebounds. Kevin Seraphin scored 14, including the go-ahead dunk to make it 90-89 with 5.7 seconds remaining.
Xavier Silas scored 10 points for Washington, one of several guards playing more minutes due to Bradley Beal’s injury. Beal was expected to undergo surgery Sunday for the non-displaced fracture in his left wrist that he suffered Friday at Charlotte.
Andre Drummond led the Pistons (2-1) with 21 points, making all nine of his shots. Greg Monroe added 17 points and 10 rebounds.
