Washington Wizards forward Kris Humphries had surgery on his right small finger Thursday to repair nerve damage and will not return to basketball activities for 3-4 weeks.
Humphries’ hand was caught in the rim during the season opener against the Chicago Bulls. At the time, Humphries was labeled as simply having a laceration.
Surgery between his fourth and fifth phalanxes (small and ring finger) was performed by Dr. Richard Barth.
Humphries was part of a sign-and-trade deal in the offseason between the Wizards and the Boston Celtics. The Wizards sent part of the mid-level trade exception to Boston for Humphries before signing the veteran to a three-year, $13 million deal.
He is expected to add to the Wizards front court depth, joining Nene, Drew Gooden, DeJuan Blair and Marcin Gortat.
Humphries’ surgery will leave the Wizards depleted up front for their Oct. 29 opener at Miami. Nene and Blair will likely serve one-game suspensions that day for their role in a scuffle with the Bulls in the preseason opener.
