House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi is putting the squeeze on senior members to give more campaign cash to House Democrats’ political committee to finance the final push to the Nov. 4 election, according to a report Friday.
Mrs. Pelosi, California Democrat, made the appeal in a conference call Thursday with senior House Democrats, saying they need to replenish the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee coffers, reported Roll Call.
“Clearly they need money, and they’re putting the heat on,” a Democrat who was on the call told the newspaper.
Mrs. Pelosi warned that if House Democrats lose seats, they also will lose committee assignments, according to the report.
Mrs. Pelosi, who was joined on the call by DCCC Chairman Steve Israel, New York Democrat, also urged the senior congressmen to put pressure on rank-and-file members to pay up assigned party dues.
The DCCC is renowned for its fundraising prowess. But this year the committee has been overwhelmed by outside groups allied with Republicans that have poured money into the elections.
House Democrats, who have virtually no chance of winning back a majority in the House, also have seen their allies gravitate to Senate race to help Democrats in jeopardy of losing majority control of that chamber.
House Democrats insisted that the party isn’t panicking.
Mr. Israel said on the call that no Democratic incumbent is a lost cause at this point.
