After Twitter users blasted Sen. Marco Rubio for praising embattled University of Florida quarterback Treon Harris in a pair of ill-timed tweets over the weekend, the Florida Republican deleted the posts Thursday.

“Deleted tweet about UF athlete due to pending investigation. Sexual violence on campus is a serious national problem,” Mr. Rubio tweeted Thursday.

On Saturday, Mr. Rubio praised Mr. Harris on Twitter for his performance in the Gators’ 10-9 win over the University of Tennessee.

Mr. Harris was suspended indefinitely by the team two days later after the university athletic department announced that he has accused of sexually assaulting a female student on campus grounds early Sunday morning.
