LAKEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia says the separation of church and state is the most foundational freedom in the United States.
Scalia made a religious speech Wednesday at Colorado Christian University in Lakewood. He speaks about the Constitution Wednesday evening at the University of Colorado in Boulder.
The conservative Supreme Court justice told about 400 people at the religious school that religious people can express belief in a society that separates church and state. But he warned that government must not try to compel religious belief.
Scalia said that acknowledging God in public life is “in the best of American tradition.”
Asked about pressure, Scalia joked that his lifetime tenure means he doesn’t feel any pressure.
Scalia has served on the nation’s highest court for nearly 30 years.
