Edgars Rinkevics, the foreign minister of Latvia, sent out a Twitter message announcing he’s gay — a somewhat shocker of a statement that was shared and retweeted over a thousand times in just a few short hours.

To compare to normal, Mr. Rinkevics’ tweets usually garner no more than 20 interactions and shares, The Associated Press reported.

But his late Thursday tweet was an eye-catcher.

Using the hashtag #Proudtobegay, “Mr. Rinkevics later sent out a second tweet in English: “I proudly announce I am gay … Good luck all of you …”

The second message was tweeted 1,200 times and favorites 1,700 times within a short period of time, AP said.

The Foreign Ministry confirmed the messages were genuine.
