Protesters in Hong Kong, demanding more democracy from their government, clashed with police for about four hours on Thursday, witnesses and authorities said.
Three were arrested in what turned out to be a violent engagement — the first in two weeks of the long-running protest, The Associated Press reported.
Thousands have been camping in the streets for weeks, demanding the government allow for free and open nominations for Hong Kong’s new leader, AP said. Beijing, meanwhile, continues to insist that a committee would oversee the nomination process and actually screen all the candidates.
Thursday’s skirmish started when a man shined his cellphone light into an officer’s eyes, and police then tried to arrest him. The crowd surged and police tried to beat them back. At least one protester was left bleeding from the head, AP said.
