In a race that broke the bank, Republican challenger Thom Tillis squeaked out a victory over Democratic incumbent Kay R. Hagan in North Carolina, securing a Senate majority for Republicans.

Republicans targeted Ms. Hagan from the start of the 2014 cycle, figuring she was among the most vulnerable Democrats in traditionally red states.

Ultimately, Republicans seized enough seats to retake the Senate with one to spare. Voters in Alaska may add to their gains.
