It may be news to his fellow Democrats, but President Obama said Wednesday that it’s “good news” that both the House and Senate are controlled by Republicans.
During a press conference at the White House, Mr. Obama said now the GOP leadership can come together and put forth one uniform agenda, thus making it easier to negotiate and find common ground between the two parties.
“The good news is that now Mitch McConnell and John Boehner are from the same party. I think they can come together and decide what their agenda is,” the president said. “They’ve got sufficient majorities to make real progress on some of these issues. And, you know, I’m certainly going to be spending a lot more time with them now because that’s the only way that we’re going to be able to get some stuff done.”
Mr. Obama already has spoken with Mr. McConnell, Kentucky Republican, and Mr. Boehner, Ohio Republican, in the aftermath of Tuesday’s midterm elections, in which the GOP captured control of the Senate and widened its lead in the House.
The president will host the two Republicans and other congressional leaders at the White House on Friday.
