A member of Montana’s Ku Klux Klan said he’s recruiting for new faces to join — and not necessarily white ones.
John Abarr of Great Falls said the Klan’s renounced its white supremacist ways and wants to bring more diversity to the group.
“The KKK is for a strong America,” he told the Great Falls Tribune. “White supremacy is the old Klan. This is the new Klan.”
Last year, Mr. Abarr held a summit in Caspar that included members of the NAACP, the Tribune reported. His views on race have changed in recent years, he said, to the point where he’d leave the group in order to form a more unified front to fight for America.
The new Klan will not focus on race, but rather on reining in the federal government and keeping Capitol Hill from establishing a “new world order” under a unified force, he said.
But not all say Mr. Abarr is as reformed a racist as he puts forth.
“If John Abarr was actually reformed, he could drop the label of the KKK,” Rachel Carroll-Rivas on the Montana Human Rights Network told the Tribune. “They know that their beliefs aren’t popular, so they try to appear moderate. I think it’s just a farce. Our mission for the last 24 years has been to shine a light on hatred.”
