Kansans re-elected Governor Sam Brownback on Tuesday night, despite backlash against his economic strategy that involved substantial tax cuts to schools.
Mr. Brownback defeated his Democratic opponent, Paul Davis, who promised during the campaign to restore school funding and end the governor’s economic “experiment.” Mr. Davis conceded to Mr. Brownback just after midnight, The Associated Press reported.
Since being elected in 2010, Mr. Brownback implemented large tax breaks in an attempt to jump-start the economy and bring more jobs to Kansas. The economy, however, has been slow to recover, and many of the tax cuts have hit public schools.
Dissatisfaction among Kansans with his economic policy led him to trail behind Mr. Davis for much of the campaign, despite Kansas being a state that is traditionally deep-red.
