Republican candidate Joni Ernst has seized the Senate seat left by retiring Democratic senator Tom Harkin, representing the icing on the cake for GOP contenders who took back the upper chamber late Tuesday.

Ms. Ernst, who topped Democrat Bruce Braley to switch the seat from blue to red, made a name for herself with an early ad that boasted about her expertise in castrating hogs.

Supporters frequently told her to “make ’em squeal” in Washington, and she will now get that chance.
