Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, who’s poised to win her re-election bid Tuesday, has been activated by the National Guard to help respond to lava from the active Kilauea volcano threatening a rural town.

Ms. Gabbard, a military police captain, will join 80 or so other members of her Army National Guard unit, USA Today reported.

She joined the Guard in 2003 and is a veteran of the Iraq War.
