South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley defeated Democratic challenger Vincent Sheheen on Tuesday, delivering the Palmetto State’s first female governor a second term.
The Associated Press called the race Ms. Haley, a Republican, as her fellow Republicans in the U.S. Senate — Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott — also savored victories.
Mr. Haley’s win late Tuesday was never really in doubt, as she enjoyed double-digit leads in polls leading up to the contest.
The 42-year-old is one of two Indian American governors in the U.S., along with Lousiana’s Bobby Jindal, a fellow Republican.
“No one fights harder for South Carolina than Governor Haley, and because of her, it’s going to be another great four years,” New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, chairman of the Republican Governors Association.
