New York congressman Michael Grimm, who was indicted on tax and wire fraud charges in April and in January threatened to throw a reporter off a balcony after President Obama’s State of the Union address, defeated his Democratic opponent on Tuesday, according to multiple media projections.
Mr. Grimm, a Republican who represents Staten Island and some of Brooklyn, was up by double-digits over Democratic challenger Domenic Recchia with more than 70 percent of the vote counted in the 11th district.
The congressman has shown his resilience despite facing numerous criminal charges and, after Mr. Obama’s address earlier this year, telling a NY1 reporterswho asked him about campaign finance irregularities that he would break him in half, “like a boy.”
The remarks were caught on tape, and Mr. Grimm later apologized.
