President Obama gave a gloomy assessment of Democrats’ chances in the midterm elections Tuesday, saying the election map couldn’t be worse for his party.
“This is probably the worst possible group of states for Democrats since Dwight Eisenhower,” Mr. Obama told a radio station in Connecticut Tuesday afternoon. Polls were still open as he spoke.
“There are a lot of states that are being contested where they just tend to tilt Republican,” Mr. Obama said. For example, incumbent Senate Democrats are trying to hold onto seats in North Carolina, Arkansas, Alaska and Louisiana.
Republicans need to gain a net of six seats to take control of the Senate. The GOP is also expected to pick up seats in the House, where it already holds a substantial majority.
