Republican David Perdue won the election for Georgia’s Senate seat, holding the state for the GOP despite tough headwinds that had seemed to give Democrats hope for a pickup.

With networks projecting GOP victories in Georgia, Kansas and Kentucky, Republicans were poised to defend all of their states, leaving them purely on offense.

Democrats had hoped to be able to dent the GOP advance by stealing one of those seats, turning to Michelle Nunn, a senator’s daughter in Georgia, to try to win there and to another legacy, Allison Lundergan Grimes, to unseat Sen. Mitch McConnell in Kentucky. But both dell short.

Meanwhile in Kansas, a deep-red state, Democrats actually withdrew their candidate, leaving it to independent Greg Orman to try to ride a wave of disgust at incumbents. But he fell short in his bid to unseat Sen. Pat Roberts.
