LOS ANGELES (AP) - Sen. Dianne Feinstein wants to create two national monuments in the Mojave Desert, and she’s considering asking the White House to act without approval of Congress.
The Los Angeles Times reports (https://lat.ms/1AbhaiD ) Feinstein said Monday that she wants to break an impasse that stalled two previous bills to create the protected zones. The largest of the two is Mojave Trails on 921,000 acres along the old Route 66, between Ludlow and Needles.
The smaller Sand to Snow National Monument would cover about 134,000 acres near Joshua Tree National Park.
The bills have been held up by Republicans and by conflicts among environmentalists, off-roaders, hunters and renewable-energy interests.
Feinstein said she would ask President Barack Obama to use his authority to create monuments if lawmakers do not act by next year.
