Vendors across the country saw a huge spike in sales on Black Friday, including gun sales, the FBI said.
FBI officials are concerned over the background checks yet to be completed for the sales. There are over 144,000 background checks that need to be processed after the Friday sales, but a lot of them aren’t completed and so won’t be processed right away, CNN reported Friday.
Officials estimate that about 3,000 or 2 percent of the 144,000 Black Friday background checks will not be completed due to insufficient information.
The huge amount of checks, nearly three per second, about three times the daily average, must be processed by 600 FBI and contract call center employees who must work 17-hour days to clear the background checks in three business days as required by law.
“Traditionally, Black Friday is one of our busiest days for transaction volume,” FBI spokesman Stephen Fischer told CNN.
The agency brings in 100 extra employees to help handle the increase.
