Doorbuster deals and rock bottom prices are advertised for just about everything on Black Friday — even cats.
The Washington Humane Society is offering a special “Black Furdays” flash sale on adoptable pets on Friday and Saturday, slashing adopting fees down to $10 for some animals.
“We find that sometimes when people are unsure about whether to check out an animal for adoption this will help bring them in,” said Zenit Chughtai, a humane society spokeswoman.
Adoption fees will be knocked down for all of the 100 to 200 animals — including dogs, cats, rabbits and hamsters — currently available for adoption at both the New York Avenue and Georgia Avenue animal shelters in the District.
Animals with black fur or black spots will be available for just $10, while all other adoptions will be half off. And judging by the abundance of photos of tuxedo cats and spotted terriers on the humane society’s website, there are plenty of deals to go around.
Cat adoptions normally cost $85 and dogs $170.

“All animals go home spayed or neutered and vaccinated and get a voucher for a free first vet visit,” Ms. Chughtai said of the pet-owner perks included in the deal.
But for those embracing the Black Friday mentality and truly seeking the best bargain, the Fairfax County Animal Shelter is waiving adoption fees for animals on Friday only.
According to this year’s National Retail Federation Thanksgiving weekend shopping survey, approximately 95 million people expect to shop nationally on Black Friday.
Ms. Chughtai said the humane society has tried to entice potential pet owners with holiday-themed deals in the past.
“Last year we did a campaign that was more Thanksgiving-themed. It was “Adopt a Butterball” and it was focused adoptions of large animals,” she said.
The humane society’s shelters are located at 7319 Georgia Ave. in Northwest, D.C. and 1201 New York Ave. in Northeast. Both locations will be open from noon to 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday for the “Black Furdays” specials. The Fairfax shelter, located at 4500 West Ox Rd., will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.
