Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III briefly spoke to reporters Thursday, the first time he has addressed the media since being benched by coach Jay Gruden earlier in the week.
While walking from the practice bubble to the main facility at Redskins Park, Griffin answered six questions, including one repeated question about his reaction to the news. None of his responses were longer than two sentences.
“You know, it’s coach’s decision,” Griffin said. “I’m here to help this team win.”
Griffin was asked about his goal for the remainder of the season, whether the news was disappointing, whether he can use it as motivation and whether he’s encouraged by his progress this season. He answered each question with virtually the same response.
“I’m here to help this team win any way I can,” Griffin said in response to one question.
“I’m just focused on helping us win,” he replied to another. “That’s all I can do.”
Griffin’s benching was first reported Tuesday night and confirmed Wednesday by Gruden. Colt McCoy, who began the season as Washington’s third-string quarterback, will start Sunday in Indianapolis.
Gruden said the third-year quarterback was “not happy about the change, nor should he be.” Griffin was not permitted to speak to reporters during Wednesday’s media availability period.
