The mother of Michael Brown says she doesn’t believe Officer Darren Wilson’s version of what happened in the Aug. 9altercation that left her son dead.

“I know my son far too well to - he would never do anything like that,” Lesley McSpadden said on “CBS This Morning.” “He would never provoke anyone to do anything to him and he wouldn’t do anything to anybody. I don’t believe a word of it.”

In an interview with ABC News, Officer Wilson, who is white, said the 18-year-old Brown, who is black, charged at him, disregarding his instructions, and that it was Brown who threw the first punch.

“The reason I have a clean conscience is ’cause I know I did my job right,” he said.

Prosecuting attorney Robert McCulloch announced Monday that a grand jury did not find sufficient evidence to charge the officer with a crime, reigniting racial tensions surrounding the incident and sparking nationwide protests.

“Nothing you could say, but, again, you know, I’m sorry that their son lost his life. It wasn’t the intention of that day. It’s what occurred that day. And there’s no … nothing you could say that’s gonna make a parent feel better,” Officer Wilson said.

Ms. McSpadden, who appeared with Brown’s father, Michael Brown Sr., said they continue to ask for calm and that they can’t be held accountable for other people’s actions.

“I don’t think he wanted to kill my son, but he wanted to kill someone,” she said. “His conscience is clear? How could your conscience be clear after killing somebody, even if it was an accidental death?”
