BOSTON (AP) - Massachusetts residents are bracing for nightmarish conditions on the highways as a winter storm descends on the state on the day when people take to the highways for Thanksgiving travel.

The first major winter storm of the season is expected to hit the state later Wednesday morning, bringing a sloppy mixture of rain, sleet and snow.

The storm is expected to intensify in the afternoon and last most of the day.

While areas to the south of Boston and Cape Cod are expected to get just rain, an inch to three inches of snow could fall in the Boston area.

Forecasters predict that central and western Massachusetts could get eight to 10 inches.

The potential for heavy snow has prompted some high schools to reschedule the traditional Thanksgiving morning football games.
