London Tower Bridge is falling down — or at least, that was the ostensible fear of pedestrians, who strolled onto the iconic walkway and tourist hotspot and discovered a portion of the newly installed 140-foot-tall glass walkway had been completely shattered.

Authorities reported a layer of the walkway’s glass was shattered when someone dropped a glass beer bottle, a U.K. tabloid reported. The situation was made worse when a woman wearing high heels then walked across the damaged portion.

The glass walkway is only two weeks old.

“We are gutted it’s happened in the first couple of weeks when it’s been open to the public, but it’s completely safe,” Tower Bridge head Chris Earlie told a British television network. “We should have said no glass on the glass section of the floor. It was a bit shortsighted of us.”

The organization said there was never any danger of anyone falling through the damaged section. The bridge was constructed of five layers of glass, with the top layer being a “sacrificial layer” that can be broken without any danger to walkers.

The walkway, a popular tourist spot and London landmark, allows pedestrians to see the Thames River.
