OPINION:
Crazy as it may seem, none of the debate about immigration reform focuses on the real issue (“Sen. Jeff Flake says executive action will make further immigration reform difficult,” Web, Nov. 23). The primary division between Democrats and Republicans is not whether we treat illegal aliens humanely, but whether we should open our borders to anyone who wants access.
Most Republicans would support a path for citizenship for illegals already in the country if we secured our borders and enforced our immigration laws. Secure borders and law enforcement are the only means we have of preventing this same problem happening again 10 years from now.
Democrats want us to copy England, France and other European countries by opening our borders to anyone to wants entry. Republicans do not oppose immigration but want it done under a system of rules and laws.
The president’s recent executive order does nothing to stop the flow of illegals across our borders. To the contrary; his actions send a message that if you can get here you can stay — and eventually be granted citizenship.
None can deny that an unrestrained flow of immigrants will result in more unemployment for uneducated citizens, lower wages, a greater tax burden on the middle class and more crime. As long as Democrats refuse to secure our borders and advocate a so-called “worldview” for open borders, don’t expect real immigration reform.
