LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles is considering a law requiring gun owners to lock up their weapons or use trigger locks when they’re not being used.
The City Council on Monday ordered the city attorney’s office to begin drafting an ordinance similar to one in San Francisco that a federal appeals court upheld this year.
Supporters say the ordinance would fill a gap in state law that requires guns to come with safety locks but doesn’t require owners to actually use them.
The council also tentatively approved a measure requiring ammunition dealers to transmit their sales records electronically to the Police Department. Currently, dealers must only keep copies but police say it’s time-consuming to check them.
That measure still needs a second vote of approval and the mayor’s signature to take effect.
