A Georgetown University student who was mugged at gunpoint refused to condemn his assailants because to do so from his “perch of privilege” would be unfair.
Senior Oliver Friedfeld penned “I Was Mugged, And I Understand Why” for The Hoya Nov. 18 detailing his ordeal, which happened as he walked home from Dupont Circle.
“Who am I to stand from my perch of privilege, surrounded by million-dollar homes and paying for a $60,000 education, to condemn these young men as ’thugs?’ ” Mr. Friedfeld wrote. “It’s precisely this kind of ’otherization’ that fuels the problem.”
The student ended his piece by saying “the millennial generation is taking over the reins of the world, and thus we are presented with a wonderful opportunity to right some of the wrongs of the past.”
Educational watchdog Campus Reform asked Mr. Friedfeld for comment on his story, but he did not respond to the website’s request. The Hoya has deleted the original story from its website, but a cached version on Google still exists.
