Famed comic Chevy Chase gave a somewhat bewildering performance at a recent Humane Society of the United States gala, serving so poorly as a presenter that he was described by one attendee as a rambling “train wreck.”

The New York Post reported that the animals at the show weren’t that well-behaved — with one spilling a drink on a socialite and another urinating on the carpet. But it was Mr. Chase who grabbed headlines.

He reportedly took the stage with one of his daughters to introduce Georgina Bloomberg, Amanda Hearst and Kimberly Ovitz, but he “rambled on and repeated himself,” a source told the newspaper.

“No one could tell if it was an act, but his daughter was teasing him, pointing to the script and telling him to stop talking and read,” the source told the Post.

Others said he seemed a “train wreck” and “completely out of it,” the newspaper reported.

Mr. Chase, a former “Saturday Night Live” star who went on to a successful movie career, ultimately regrouped and made the introductions.

“He finally introduced Georgina, Amanda and Kim,” the Post reported, citing sources in attendance. “He was mumbling, but then saw Kim’s name and was like, ’Kimberly Ovitz! Your father was my manager for 20 years, which explains why you haven’t seem me in a movie since 1988.”

Apparently, his performance was shocking enough that Ms. Bloomberg commented, “Thank you, Chevy, for making us all look so together,” the Post reported.
