Rep. Marcia Fudge, chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus, issued a scathing assessment of the grand jury ruling that found Officer Darren Wilson was innocent of any crime during the shooting of Ferguson teen Michael Brown, calling the decision a “miscarriage of justice” in a written statement.
“It is a slap in the face to Americans nationwide who continue to hope and believe that justice will prevail,” she said, The Hill reported. “This decision seems to underscore an unwritten rule that black lives hold no value; that you may kill black men in this country without consequences or repercussions. This is a frightening narrative for every parent and guardian of black and brown children and another setback for race relations in America.”
She made the statement just minutes after St. Louis County prosecutor Robert McCulloch announced the 12-member grand jury found no cause to indict Officer Wilson in the Aug. 9 shooting death of Brown.
Celebrities, too, weighed in on the ruling.
Comedy kind Chris Rock tweeted: “Doesn’t take 100 days to decide if murder is a crime, it takes 100 days to figure out how to tell people it isn’t … #FergusonDecision.”
And basketball star LeBron James posted a cartoon of Mike Brown walking arm-in-arm with Trayvon Martin, the Florida teen who was shot and killed during an altercation with George Zimmerman, ABC News reported.
Even Cher had an opinion, tweeting: “Have problem re decision not 2bring 2 trial, Police who shot young man near St Louis. Something must b done 2 protect innocent young blk men.”
And Magic Johnson, basketball legend: “We must work together to stop the unnecessary loss of young men of color. Justice was not served in Ferguson,” he tweeted, ABC News reported.
Pop sensation Katy Perry, meanwhile, tweeted this: “Feeling stuck all the way over here in Sydney seeing the news just now … Sending my prayers to Ferguson & praying for an equal America.”
