Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said the United States and Europe collectively failed in what he characterized as a mass effort to bring Iraq “to its knees” on nuclear talks.

“On the nuclear issue, the United States and European colonialist countries gathers and applied their entire efforts to bring the Islamic Republic to its knees but they could not and they will not,” he said on his website, The Associated Press reported.

Mr. Khamenei was referring to the U.S.-brokered deal to extend nuclear talks between the P5+1 nations and Iraq to March 1. The deadline to reach a decision had been Monday.

The March 1 deadline is actually the day the powers will settle on a schedule of when a final nuclear decision is due — sometime by summer, AP said.
