Washington Redskins special teams captain and linebacker Adam Hayward has a tibial plateau fracture which requires surgery. He will be placed on injured reserve and is out for the rest of the season. Hayward was injured when he landed awkwardly while trying to down a punt Sunday.
Cornerback Tracy Porter could also be lost for the remainder of the season. Porter has an AC joint separation. “That could be a lengthy time,” coach Jay Gruden said.
The Redskins suffered other, less significant, injuries in Sunday’s 17-13 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Cornerback E.J. Biggers was concussed. He is going through the league’s concussion protocol.
Running back Silas Redd has a “rib contusion, sprain,” according to Gruden. He is expected to improve as the week moves forward.
Safety Ryan Clark had a “stinger.” Gruden said Clark has no issues now.
Inactive for the game were tight end Jordan Reed (hamstring) and left tackle Trent Williams (ankle, knee). Reed remains day-to-day. Williams may be on the mend.
He was at Redskins Park on Monday for medical treatment. Gruden says Williams will be back in Tuesday for more treatment. The hope is that Williams can return to practice Wednesday in a limited capacity.
His replacement, rookie Morgan Moses, was allowed three sacks Sunday.
Two months ago, the Redskins lost defensive captain DeAngelo Hall for the season because of an Achilles injury. Now, special teams captain Hayward is out for the year. Williams is the offensive captain and is trying to get back on the field after playing hurt the majority of the season.
“It’s tough duty for captains around here,” Gruden said with a laugh.
To fill Hayward’s spot, the Redskins promoted Steve Beauharnais from the practice squad to the active roster.
